Kicker: Relief measures aim to ease financial burden amid Gulf shipment disruptions

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry has announced significant storage charge waivers ranging from 25% to 50% at terminals operated by the Karachi Port Trust (KPT), offering much-needed relief to exporters impacted by recent disruptions in Gulf-bound shipments.

The initiative, carried out under the supervision of KPT Chairman Shahid Ahmed, follows consultations with terminal operators to address mounting concerns from the export sector. Under the revised structure, a 50% waiver has been granted at KGTL from March 1–20, 2026, and at KICT from March 1–10, 2026, while SAPT is offering a 25% waiver from March 11–31, 2026.

The minister stated that the relief applies specifically to export containers stranded at terminal yards due to operational disruptions that prevented timely loading. He emphasized that the move is intended to reduce financial pressure on exporters, facilitate clearance of pending consignments, and improve overall cargo handling efficiency.

Describing the decision as a step toward a more business-friendly maritime environment, Chaudhry highlighted the importance of minimizing avoidable costs caused by logistical delays. He also stressed the need for enhanced coordination among ports and terminal operators to ensure smoother trade flows.

The minister reiterated that such measures are part of broader efforts to strengthen the maritime sector, boost export performance, and enhance investor confidence through improved port efficiency and service delivery.
